I like ...Hello Deacon Patrick,

Thanks for the kudos. I like you analogy about the clogged arteries. I agree that the "patient" (i.e. the US economy) has clogged arteries, and that giving blood won't increase blood flow. The problem is that the diagnosis is not simply clogged arteries: it is uncontrolled bleeding. The blood flow must be staunched and the patient stabilized in order that the longer-term issue can be addressed. So, while we are looking at the problem from different angles, I don't think we are in fundamental agreement.

Blessings to you!Father Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09254403915890195830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580088770310784505.post-67841083623673496812008-09-29T18:50:00.000-06:002008-09-29T18:50:00.000-06:00Your "simple question" is very well put. It looks like you've got a few days' worth of reading material there, so I'll be checking in as time allows!

Thanks for posting these discussions--one doesn't often see economic matters thoughtfully analyzed from the Catholic perspective.CMinorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07305306030099439903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580088770310784505.post-31123766170090048192008-09-24T20:55:00.000-06:002008-09-24T20:55:00.000-06:00Prof. Ramon Tulio here. Although many, including myself, would agree with you regarding the centrality of the life and dignity of the human person, I think there may be a reason the Compendium has four principles. Perhaps the source and summit, as you say, is ultimately Eucharistic...not just in systematic theology but also Catholic Social Teaching. Our life in the world is a step into the paschal mystery, if you take discipleship seriously...the paschal mystery is the pattern of our lives and the imitation of Christ in our various states of life.

This is all a long way to say that I'd rather keep that Eucharistic center in the middle of it all, and allow the four principles the Compendium allows.

It's interesting that the Compendium has these four principles...whittled down from the seven principles in the USCCB's Sharing Catholic Social Teaching...whittled down from popular articulations of 10 or more!

I agree the principles need to be held in balance.

More later (re: the above posts), Thanks for all the work on my favorite subject!
--Professor TulioThe Ironic Catholichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12990289461877567408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580088770310784505.post-59106832592516517412008-09-22T07:22:00.000-06:002008-09-22T07:22:00.000-06:00Deacon Patrick, I responded at a bit more length a...Deacon Patrick, I responded at a bit more length at my blog.
